5 Rules that will “Make your Blog more readable”

Have you ever left a blog or website because of it’s bad content display….? Yeah! I know You did… I did…  And everyone will do…

I hope  ”You don’t wan’t your readers to do the same on your blog…” Do you…?

Well! enough of those scary stuffs. What’s the point I am trying to show is this, “If your blog is not readable then you will loose the reader in first 5 sec..”

So While I design  blogs themes I use these rules to make my content more readable,

Rule #1 – Line Height

Yeah… The line height of the main content must be larger than the normal height. Good height between the lines is form 1.3em  to  1.7em. Not more than that, if you don’t know how to add a line height, see the sample code below.

Rule #2 – Word Spacing

What ever the font your are using the space between the words have to be increased by at least 0.2em , this will give you enough whitespace between the words and will help the readers to read without extra strain.

Rule #3 – Space between Paragraphs

Increase the space between the Paragraphs, adding more space between the content will give an extra clarity credit ;) . We use <p> and </p> tag to create a paragraph, especially in WordPress. You have to increase the bottom margin of the <p> tag to increase the space between each and every paragraphs (to at least 15px) .

Note:

You may think “Who is this maniac, always talking about spacing…”

Well! the first three rules are dedicated to add spacing to necessary areas. Because…..

“LOT’S OF WHITESPACE WILL ADD MORE CLARITY”

I can’t stress “that” more than that :) .

Rule #4 – Ad placement

Just google the word “Ad placement” you will get thousands of sites talking about ad placement like blah! blah! blah! (It’s a over talked topic). I am not going to talk about that.

Most of the site tells you to blend the ads into the content for better performance. Well I agree that this is 100% true, but wrong blending choices will kill the content’s readability.

If you want to add an Ad into a blog post, place it above the content (see below image). Don’t make it float on left or right site… (at least till you get 10,000 pageviews per day ;) )

Rule #5 – Background color

This is the most Important rule of all… In short, use White as background color and Black as text color. You may wonder, why always white and black… Because, since the dawn of times, we are using White paper and a dark color to write on it.

And humans developed a nature to stick with white and black for reading. Have you ever seen a green news paper with black text? No! right? That’s it. Moreover peoples like reading in this color.

Other than Black and White if you want to use a dark background like Darkgray, Dark brown (although not recommended) use only WHITE as text color, please not any orange, green or any other bright colors.

Bonus Tip

As usual let’s wrap this up with an bonus tip…

If you closely watch my blogs, I am not using Black as a font color for text and heading. Shocking..?

Yeah..! I use a color lighter than black it’s hexadecimal value is #384244. This gives you a light black color. I use this color because Dark black (#000000) will sometimes force the readers to give extra strain to read it.
