7 Blender mistakes to avoid while adding ads to your Professional blog
“Blending ads with your content” This is one of the most popular topic among bloggers and it’s been analyzed over and over again on the web. But Still why I write this is…
I am not talking about “How to make your readers click on the ads” I am talking about “How to monetize your Professional blog without making it look like a made for adsense site (MFA sites)“.
Peoples’s talk about blending, blending, blending ads, but there is something you should know. There is two type of blending Ads.
- “Made for AdSense” (MFA) blending.
- Blending ads in a Professional blog.
First kind is clearly about placing ads on your site to make your readers click on it… and most important thing is that MFA sites never have returning visitors. The Aim is “Get a visitor”, ”Make then click the ads”, “Let them go”.
So for such kind of sites, Ad placement is pretty much easy. “Place all the ads around and inside the content” That’s it. I bet you will get nearly a 6% Click through rate on your ads.
But Ad placement for your professional blog is very different than the first kind. Because You must not make your readers feel like they are inside a AD pond.
Note: More the ad you use less the credibility you will gain
So Deliver the ads as not like an ad…
the 7 major mistakes that most of the people do (I did, and I don’t want you to do), while adding ads to their professional blog are…
Mistake #1. Making the AD to float inside Post content
Previously, in one of my posts (5 Rules to make your blog more readable) I already told you about this. The reason I recommend you not to make the ad to float is, In 90% of the blogs the post content area’s width will be less than 680px (pixels) and the Ad’s width will be 300px+ , So the content’s formating will look so amateur.
But we all know that “Large and Medium rectangle ad” perform very well than other AD formats. So if you decided to show a Large Rectangle ad then, Place the ad Below the title and then place the content. (see the Image below)
Trust me, The click through rate will be same even if you blend the ads (Source: from the CTR report from my previous blog)
But I recommend you to use a half banner instead of a Large rectangle. Because More the ads the readers see less the credibility you will gain.
Mistake #2. Using a Leaderboard ad above the blog
Does it makes any sense? Using a Ad on all above the whole blog?
Well..! You may have came across some top blogs using this type of ads, and you may want to use this ad placement. But If you watch this closely, This type of ad placement is used only in “Magazine Style Blogs” and “Blogs which have thousands of page views per day”.
The reason for them to use this is they have thousands of ad impressions per day, they just monetize their page views, Not clicks. And most of all they want those ads out of their Content to have clarity.
So stay away from this. Use the leaderboard ad between the logo and the content.
Mistake #3. Using more 125×125 ads on sidebar
Never use more than 4 125×125 ad on your blog unless you are getting paid for those ads.
In the web, approximately 82% of blogs use 125×125 ads of other affiliate products, because they don’t have advertisers to advertise on their site. If you are one of them, Don’t use more than 4 ads on the side bar.
Because if you use only affiliate links then you are a Rookie and everybody knows this.
Mistake #4. Using Skyscraper ads above the fold
In all blogs other than MFA sites, using Skyscraper ad below the fold works well. Because if you use a Skyscraper ad format above the fold then that will destroy the look and feel of the site due to awkward ad color (most of the times).
But when you use it below the fold the Ad visibility is increased since there will be less content after 1 scroll or two. And the sites visual will not affect even with a bad ad banner.
Mistake #5. Not hiding Affiliate Links in your Ads
If you are on to advertise a affiliate product on your site, then hide your affiliate links. There are many free and paid affiliate link cloaking plugins available online. Letting your readers see your affiliate link is 1 less of your stars as a Professional blogger.
Mistake #6. Bright Text Ad color
Let me see… hmmm… Using a yellow link color on a White colored blog is an absolute foolishness… right? That’s exactly what I am talking about. This is not only for text ads, this goes for the image ads too…
If you are using Text ads on your blogs, Then use any one of the blog’s color or typical blue link color.
If you are using third party Advertising system like AdSense then you don’t have control over image ads, but you can control CPA banners and other custom ad materials.
Bled the ad color to your blog.
Mistake #7. Using POP-UP Ads
Never ever use a Pop-Up ad on your blogs. I hope you know this rule… But I thought this would help peoples who are just starting out. If you are using pop-ups then that should fall into any of the categories below,
- Subscribe option for your Blog or your Newsletter
- Your own Product Offer (not recommended)
Make sure that your readers see those pop-ups only once or twice in a month, not more than that. And yeah… Use a professional pop up script, Not any olden days pop-ups.
